What we are reading

Attention, book lovers!

There are so many great business and mindset books out there that are fantastic in helping us achieve our business goals. I have compiled a list of my top faves that aren’t necessarily the top bestsellers, but gives just the BEST nuggets of wisdom. Either pick up a copy (second-hand, if possible!) or download the E-book or even the audiobook and gain some insight into yourself and your business, and some hot tips from experts in their fields.

Chapter One: You Have the Power to Change Stuff by Daniel Flynn

This is one of the best books designed to challenge what you know and to believe in the crazy ideas that pop into your head. It follows the many decisions, mistakes and experiences Thankyou co-founder Daniel Flynn underwent to rise his business off the ground. A great read for those who are wanting to be inspired to take that leap, or make a gut-wrenching decision; this is your wake-up call.

You are a Badass (followed by You are a Badass at Making Money) by Jen Sincero

If there’s one book out of any that you need to read, then I recommend this one hands down. A particularly great one to listen to on audiobook, Jen Sincero shares her equally funny and entertaining experiences of working her way through the ever-changing battle we call starting a business. Alongside great anecdotes, she also shares mindset and life gems to help uplift your negativity into drive and shift your mindset from “I can’t” to “I am”. A must-read for everyone.

Following the original, You are A Badass at Making Money is also a fantastic way to change your relationship with money and help you generate more of it.

Busy as F**K by Karen Nimmo

Something most of us would grudgingly admit to is our incessant love-hate relationship with being ‘busy’. New Zealand Psychologist and author Karen Nimmo tackles this in her book Busy as F**k in the form of DIY on-the-couch therapy sessions. These sessions are designed to help us slow down a bit more in our lives to help our physical and emotional health thrive in a constantly changing world. A book that may be highly valuable for us all as business owners can have trouble switching off, and attempting to do about 6,000 things at once.

Daring & Disruptive by Lisa Messenger

If you want a fast and easy read with some tangible bite-sized pieces of advice, this is an ideal place to start. Lisa uses her own trials and tribulations to send through some quintessential tips that could only have been learned from making the previous mistake. It offers the inspirational nip to the ankles that is necessary to stay on purpose, and remember that you are moving in the right direction for your business or career.

Big Magic: Creative Living Without Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert

This one is fantastic for everyone, but particularly those who are finding the creative juices lacking of late. It’s all about attracting creativity to you, and if it wants to leave, let it go, and see what the next adventure you have to start in will be!

I highly recommend for all creatives, this is an exceptional read.

Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of A Reluctant Businessman by Yvon Chouinard

Fun fact: this was written as a handbook to his staff at Patagonia then seeped through to the public and became a HUGE bestseller. Designed basically as a business handbook, and reads just like it, it is the ultimate way to pick up some advice. It holds stories and advice around both business and sustainability, as one of the integral parts of Patagonia is its passion for a sustainable environmental future, fair pay and enjoyable workspaces, and a transparent, ethical production of items.

So here’s our top recommendations on books! As we read some more, we may add in some extras from time to time, but we would also love to hear your recommendations. Has a particular business book lit your fire lately? Tell us about it, we’re always looking for new books to fall in love with.
